Mike Nesmith wrote a song about a real suicide
During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, the three surviving members of The Monkees – Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz – discussed the group’s music. Specifically, they named the 15 Monkees songs that shaped their lives. One of the songs was called “Admiral Mike”.
“I wrote ‘Admiral Mike’ after reading an article about an admiral who killed himself because the press claimed he had done something outrageous, but there was no evidence,” Nesmith recalls. “It was never adjudicated. He was never convicted of any wrongdoing, but the press only criticized him instead of being cautious and impartial in their reporting.”
This issue bothered Nesmith. “It pissed me off and just thought, ‘I want to write something about journalists who need some sense of responsibility for the truth,’ he said. ‘It was never more prominent and important than it is now.”
